What’s about the competition? Let’s see..
As promised, here we are again!
This time, however, to provide you with some technical information inherent to the great competition that is about to face our Davide Cavaglieri (Italian barista champion 2018) and to take away some curiosity about it.
First of all, let’s start by defining what the competition consists of: 15 minutes are available to competitors to make 3 drinks (one coffee espresso, a milk beverage and a signature beverage). At each additional second, a point will be deducted from the total score. In any case, it will not be possible to go beyond the sixteenth minute, under penalty of disqualification.
It is important to underline that the objective of this competition is not only the quality of the performance itself, but also, and above all, the fact that the competitors must bring a good level of innovation, in terms of taste and technique. These, therefore, are the main points in which the barman focuses on in view of the final result.
To judge the proof of each competitor there is a jury composed of 4 sensory judges, 1 technical judge (who does not taste the drinks but focuses on observing how the different steps occur) and 1 head of the jury (ie the one who has the task to standardize the vote and not to allow it to fall into distorted results). Approximately around eighty judges alternate between these figures.
Particularly important is the fact that the judge does not evaluate according to his preference (ie whether or not he likes the taste of the beverage), but rather if the taste that remains in his mouth is the same that the barista had previously described and presented to him.
Before arriving at this last important phase of the race, however, Davide had to face several stages of selection. After the Italian semi-final, he won the national final in Rimini (Sigep 2018). Now all the winners of the different national competitions will be gathered in Amsterdam to decree the best world barista.
The WBC 2018 dates are divided as follows:
– The preliminaries will be held on 20 and 21 June
– On 22 June the semi-finals (where the best 15 will compete)
– On 23 June the final (where only 6 left will compete)
